Perhaps the most dramatic case is that of New Orleans-based Tidewater, which was once viewed as one of the strongest offshore service vessel operators in the world.
In mid-September, the company received waivers on debt repayment from its lenders that extended payment deadlines to Oct. Another round of waivers is possible, but unlikely, according to the company. Tidewater said that it was continuing to work toward amending its various debt arrangements, but there was a possibility that the company will have to consider other options, including a possible reorganization under Chapter 11 bankruptcy. In this strained environment, Tidewater is not the only one in hot water.
Gulfmark, Hornbeck Offshore and others are also struggling. The market is still flooded with OSVs, with an estimated new vessels still on the order books. Not all of these will enter the market. Some have been cancelled, and more cancellations are sure to come. These vessels are in addition to the 88 OSVs that have already been delivered this year. To accommodate the new vessels, the market will have to shed scores of older vessels. While the overall Index broke even, the Operators Index was down over 3.
All three are being hit hard by the depressed energy sector. One or more of these companies may end up having to file for bankruptcy reorganization. The last several quarters have eked out compliance with bank covenants by drawing on the bank line to repurchase public debt. Very little cash has been generated from operations. It appears to be only a matter of time before Gulfmark will be in covenant default.
