As someone who teaches about adolescent development, I wanted her parents to get this conversation right. Here are six thoughts I shared with them.

Even at that early age there were no assurances for girls or boys what they would grow up to be. Fast forward into the teen years and sexual orientation becomes even more confusing. For a student, gender or sexual orientation, these days, is not instantly decided by the sex organs that they are born with.

So what do they need to know about this confusing time when they form their understanding of their sexuality? Even at a young age kids pick up strange ideas about sexuality from a wide variety of sources. Music videos, movies, and tv shows project ideas that they are too young to process. Culture around them is changing rapidly and giving them damaging information.

Dealing with this too young can put them at a disadvantag e when they are older. Although another thing you should be aware of is that puberty is happening at a younger age than it has in previous generations. One more factor to add to the confusion. Where the school yard gets it wrong is determining that if a boy loves art and can speak to girls that he is not manly enough.

He does not fit the expectations and so his sexual identity is in question. The classroom can try to choose his orientation for him.

The other way the school yard gets it wrong is where it tries to tell boys and girls that they should be interested in the opposite sex at a time when these attractions should not be turned on. These scripts that students believe are often determined by culture. A student who has no interest in the opposite sex may run a script through their head saying in an over simplified way that they must be attracted to the same sex. The confusion in our culture is passed on and enforced by children.

As the body develops sexual interest increases. Unfortunately it takes the brain a while to catch up. Early sexual experimentation in either a the opposite gender or the same gender can mess with healthy development. When kids know much more than they can process because of the internet and from what their friends pick up from the internet, behaviors and knowledge get way ahead of adult reasoning.

Students are experimenting with what God has restricted to marriage. Clearly, whatever they decide about these experiences that God has not intended, they are not emotionally, mentally or spiritually ready to process.

Whatever conclusions they base on these experiences will be incorrect and likely harmful. Many straight people confess to being same sex attracted for a moment, or a season of time. As hormone levels greatly increase in both girls and boys sexual thoughts can increase dramatically. Placed in a culture that is sexually obsessed, a teen being sexually arousal by both genders is completely possible.

Friendship and intimacy that students are experiencing can also become confusing in a culture that confuses love with sex. Rushing dating and sexual experimentation beyond the mental and emotional maturity is damaging to students. Psychologists suggest that students refrain for this adult behavior until after 16 when their brain is somewhat caught up with their mature bodies. When students should be developing strong same sex friendships some have been involved sexually since Or some have been experimenting in same gender sexual activities when they should have been developing friendship.

The Atlantic Magazine reports that most Americans think that one in four or 25 percent of Americans are gay. In reality that number is much lower. Why would this make any difference to a pre-teen or a teen?

The reason is because most teens think that one out of ten students may be gay. In reality the number is much lower than that. Even if a student has had a same sex attraction or an experience, the likelihood of being exclusively gay is lower than they imagine. Watching the media, gay characters in movies or tv series have greater representation than in the nation.

In fact, if proper representation would be given, a much higher percentage would be Evangelical Christians than members of the LBGT community! He said, through the Apostle Paul, Treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.

In the Greek influenced world that the Bible is speaking to, homosexuality and promiscuity were very common. Seeing either genders and different ages, as a potential sex partner, instead of a brother or sister, was a big problem. A correction was needed then and it is needed today. Parents, pastors, churches, teachers, schools and communities need to push this agenda in the home and outside the home.

Let kids be kids. Let them be free from these adult concerns until they are adults. Protect kids from this adult information as much as possible. Help them to unlearn much of the misinformation that they are learning from friends and from society. Even Google is trying to do that! Of course as the subject comes up we need to listen lots and listen for what they are not saying as well.

Never appear shocked or alarmed at their thoughts. Always express unconditional love. Always take their concerns seriously. Never make fun. Always be sensitive to gender issues and questions about sexuality. There is no way to completely insulate a child from the sexual charged atmosphere that we live in but we can always model healthy sexuality, healthy relationships with others and share biblical standards as our children are ready to understand what we are talking about. It's one way of sorting through emerging sexual feelings. Some people might go beyond just thinking about it and experiment with sexual experiences with people of their own sex or of the opposite sex.

These experiences, by themselves, do not necessarily mean that a person is gay or straight. This abbreviation stands for "lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender" or "lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning".

Transgender isn't really a sexual orientation — it's a gender identity. Gender is another word for male or female. Transgender people may have the body of one gender, but feel that they are the opposite gender, like they were born into the wrong type of body.

People who are transgender are often grouped in with lesbian and gay as a way to include people who don't feel they fit into the category of being "straight. Why are some people straight and some people gay? There is no simple answer to that. Most medical experts, including those at the American Academy of Pediatrics AAP and the American Psychological Association APA , believe that sexual orientation involves a complex mix of biology, psychology, and environmental factors.

Scientists also believe a person's genes and hormones play an important role. Most medical experts believe that, in general, sexual orientation is not something that a person voluntarily chooses.

Instead, sexual orientation is just a natural part of who a person is. There's nothing wrong about being LGBT. Still, not everyone believes that. These kinds of beliefs can make things difficult for LGBT teens. For many LGBT people, it can feel like everyone is expected to be straight. Because of this, some gay and lesbian teens may feel different from their friends when the heterosexual people around them start talking about romantic feelings, dating, and sex.

LGBT teens might feel like they have to pretend to feel things that they don't in order to fit in with their group, family, or community. They might feel they need to deny who they are or that they have to hide an important part of themselves. Fears of prejudice, rejection, or bullying can lead people who aren't straight to keep their sexual orientation secret, even from friends and family who might support them.

Some gay or lesbian teens tell a few close friends and family members about their sexual orientation. This is often called " coming out. They feel comfortable about being attracted to someone of the same gender. But not everyone has the same good support systems.

Even though there is growing acceptance for LGBT people, many teens don't have adults they can talk to about sexual orientation. Some live in communities or families where being gay is not accepted or respected.

People who feel they need to hide who they are or who fear discrimination or violence can be at greater risk for emotional problems like anxiety and depression. Let me first prepare you: my approach is not conventional. It first deals with the parents, then the science behind physical attraction, then the strategies for how to deal with physical attraction and sexual urges.

But what you will get from me is my advice on how you can have that discussion…and others like it. Before you can teach you kids anything, you have to first deal with your own past and biases. But guard yourself against diverting attention to how you handled similar situations in your past. That emphasis takes the focus off of them and redirects it to you and your past.

Rather, be present in the moment with them. Focus on helping them figure out their situation. The compilation of those biases has created your value system.

Stand on your values…do that. If your child is responsible enough to handle a group date at 16 with some kids you know and trust, then give her a chance to prove you raised her to be a responsible young lady. Know that…you cannot control feelings. But you can control behavioral responses to those feelings. There is neurological and physiological science behind feelings of attraction. Simply put:. The same process happens to girls too. Her face turns red. She smiles and giggles think of teen girls at a Justin Bieber concert.

These feelings are the natural functioning of a maturing young boy or girl. And their physiological behavior is subconsciously automatic and physically uncontrollable. As adults, we have the luxury of experience to inform us about what our feelings mean…and how to respond to them. But teens are just trying to figure out all these new weird feelings…without embarrassing themselves. In , Heath launched the blog and book His Leadership Her Trust to combat the lack of trust women had in allowing men be leaders in their relationships.
